Youth Basketball Programs at the Southport Clubhouse
Wakeman BGC's traditional basketball leagues provide a friendly atmosphere for coaches to work with small teams of boys or girls. In this environment, they learn the basics of basketball and good sportsmanship while having fun and making new friends.
The Southport Clubhouse offers Fairfield and neighboring communities a full calendar year of unique opportunities for youth in grades Kindergarten through high school to develop their love of the game.

GRADES K-2
New! 1st-2nd Grade Developmental Basketball League
Grades 1-2
Fee: $100
Dates: Saturdays, December 7 - February 2; 9:30 - 11:30 AM
Location: Southport Clubhouse
Don't miss out on our first full season of Developmental "D" League after last year's exciting mini-session launch! Each Saturday morning, teams meet for a 30-minute practice followed immediately by a mini game against an opponent, complete with volunteer coaches, official referees, scoreboards, jerseys, 8-foot hoops and spectators - the perfect recipe for great, fun play! An eight-game schedule of games will be played at 9 AM or 10 AM weekly. Spectators are welcome for both the practice and game portion of each week.
Shooting Stars Basketball Clinic
Grades K-2
Fee: $90
Dates: Mondays, September 16, 23, 30; October 7, 14, 21 from 5:25 - 6:15 PM and Saturdays, February 8, 15, 22 from 9 - 10 AM

This introductory class is ideal for boys and girls in grades K-2, with a focus on fun while learning basic concepts such as dribbling, shooting, and passing. Participants play with size 7 WBGC basketballs (provided) and receive a t-shirt. Activity drills, games and friendly competitions will have your budding star eager to come back for more hoops action with friends! Parents/spectators are not permitted to remain in gym during clinics.

Basketball Skills Academy Clinic

Location: Southport Clubhouse/Red Baker Gym
WBGC basketball coaching staff lead players through fun and exciting basketball skills and drills balanced with fun competitions and scrimmages. Focus is on the fundamentals of the game. Players of all experiences welcome. Players will use an intermediate size ball (provided) while grouped based on grade and experience.
Basketball Skills Challenge Day
Grades: 3-5, 6-8

Pee Wee Basketball League
Grades 3-5

The Pee Wee Basketball League is a great introductory league for boys and girls in grades 3-5. There will be six divisions (3rd, 4th, and 5th grade each boys and girls), but some grades may be combined based on enrollment. Teams practice one night per week and typically play one gamer per weekend. Home court specified during player registration.

- All practices and games are held at Wakeman BGC's premier, regulation facilities
- The practice day, time, and location do not change--you can put it in your calendar for the season!
- All teams have two weeks of practice before their first game
- Club membership allows access to open gym time for players to meet up and practice or play pick up games

Can't get enough basketball in the Pee Wee League? Players signed up for Pee Wee League can take their game to the next level with an extra hour of skills instruction through dribbling and shooting drills with scrimmaging in this 9-week session led by an experienced, qualified coach.
*3rd graders are welcome, but 9-foot hoops may not be available.

WBGC basketball coaching staff provide a mix of intense drills and whistle scrimmages focused on elevating player skills and game IQ. Each week's focus is on providing an experience for current travel players, players considering travel basketball, and rec players looking to raise their level of play in the re-season. Players of all experiences welcome.
Junior Basketball League
Grades: 6-8
Fee: $129

Boys Junior League is the exciting place where 6th, 7th and 8th graders choose to play in a structured environment while learning the game and developing team skills and concepts. While traditionally a league for boys, girls are welcome too! Each grade group is scheduled to play in separate divisions however two grades may be combined based on registration. Players are assigned to a team that practices one night during the week (Monday-Friday based on participant’s availability) and play one game each weekend. Teams play a 7-game regular season and then a single elimination playoff to crown a champion in each division. Home court specified during registration.
Travel Basketball

WBGC's Travel Basketball program is for players looking to play beyond the rec level, with teams coached by experiences, paid coaches who strive to emphasize a higher level of competitive basketball experience and commitment. Teams play in the Fairfield County Basketball League (FCBL) and practice two nights per week. Practice schedules and locations are consistent for the entire season. Tryouts are completed..

Red Baker 4-on-4 League
Grades: 9-12
Fee: $112
Dates: January 2 - March 16

The Greatest League on Earth is back! Members may form their own team of 7-8 players to vie for the coveted Red Baker League Championship title. Each team plays an 8-game regular season schedule followed by a single elimination playoff. Depending on registration, 9th grade will play in their own division and there will be a second 11th - 12th grade division. All players must hold a current WBGC membership. Teens who play on their high school's basketball team are not eligible to play in the Red Baker League per CIAC rules. Submit your team by filling out the form below.

Volunteer Coaches
Our K-8th grade basketball leagues and clinics thrive with the generous assistance of more than 100 volunteer coaches annually. Coaches include moms, dads, grandparents, alumni, community members and high school students! Background checks and child safety training are mandatory for all volunteers. Contact Geoff Baranger
