Youth Basketball Programs at the Southport Clubhouse
Wakeman BGC's traditional basketball leagues provide a friendly atmosphere for coaches to work with small teams of boys or girls. In this environment, they learn the basics of basketball and good sportsmanship while having fun and making new friends.
The Southport Clubhouse offers Fairfield and neighboring communities a full calendar year of unique opportunities for youth in grades Kindergarten through high school to develop their love of the game.

Shooting Stars Basketball Clinic

This introductory class is ideal for boys and girls in grades K-2, with a focus on fun while learning basic concepts such as dribbling, shooting, and passing. Participants play with size 7 WBGC basketballs (provided) and receive a t-shirt. Activity drills, games and friendly competitions will have your budding star eager to come back for more hoops action with friends! Parents/spectators are not permitted to remain in gym during clinics.

Basketball Skills Academy Clinic

WBGC basketball coaching staff lead players through fun and exciting basketball skills and drills balanced with fun competitions and scrimmages. Focus is on the fundamentals of the game. Players of all experiences welcome. Players will use an intermediate size ball (provided) while grouped based on grade and experience.

Summer Basketball League

Players in grades 5-8 get a great basketball workout in our favorite summer league. Players are grouped into two teams each week and play a “pickup style” game with our WBGC coaching staff. Players receive reversible jerseys at the first game. Games will be refereed by current IAABO officials. All games are played in the air-conditioned Warren Gym.
Junior Basketball League
Grades: 6 - 8
Fee: $129
Season: February 3 - April 11
Location: Southport Clubhouse and Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse
Boys Junior League is the exciting place where 6th, 7th and 8th graders choose to play in a structured environment while learning the game and developing team skills and concepts. While traditionally a league for boys, girls are welcome too! Each grade group is scheduled to play in separate divisions however two grades may be combined based on registration. Players are assigned to a team that practices one night during the week (Monday-Friday based on participant’s availability) and play one game each weekend. Teams play a 7-game regular season and then a single elimination playoff to crown a champion in each division. Home court specified during registration.

WBGC's Travel Basketball program is for players looking to play beyond the rec level, with teams coached by experiences, paid coaches who strive to emphasize a higher level of competitive basketball experience and commitment. Teams play in the Fairfield County Basketball League (FCBL) and practice two nights per week. Practice schedules and locations are consistent for the entire season. Tryouts are completed..

GRADES 9 - 12
Red Baker 4-on-4 League
Grades: 9 - 12
Fee: $112
Dates: January 2 - March 16
Location: Southport Clubhouse/Red Baker Gym
The Greatest League on Earth is back! Members may form their own team of 7-8 players to vie for the coveted Red Baker League Championship title. Each team plays an 8-game regular season schedule followed by a single elimination playoff. Depending on registration, 9th grade will play in their own division and there will be a second 11th - 12th grade division. All players must hold a current WBGC membership. Teens who play on their high school's basketball team are not eligible to play in the Red Baker League per CIAC rules. Submit your team by filling out the form below. NOTE: All players must be current Wakeman BGC Members and pay 2025 league fee.
Spring Senior League
Grades: 9 - 12
Fee: $129
Dates: April 21 – June 6 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday Game Nights)

High school members love this springtime 5 on 5 Spring Basketball League. Players create their own teams. Individual players will be accepted and assigned to teams as needed. Each team will play 6 regular season weeknight games, followed by a double elimination tournament to crown the champion. Teams may be grouped into pools by grade based on enrollment. Games are held at Southport Clubhouse and Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse.

Volunteer Coaches
Our K-8th grade basketball leagues and clinics thrive with the generous assistance of more than 100 volunteer coaches annually. Coaches include moms, dads, grandparents, alumni, community members and high school students! Background checks and child safety training are mandatory for all volunteers. Contact Geoff Baranger
