Summer Counselor-in-Training Opportunities

Grades 9-11

Fee: $130/two week session


Leader-in-Training 

Note: LIT program available at Southport Clubhouse ONLY.

Grade 8

Fee: Free For Members


The CIT and LIT programs help teens develop and strengthen skills as camp counselors and future leaders in all walks of life. Each program works directly with camp groups while learning behind the scenes camp planning and organization


.Application Process

  • Complete an Application Form and schedule an interview. The application will be available at a later date.
  • Participants must commit to at least 2 weeks of volunteering for full days of camp.

If accepted, candidates will:

  • Attend a 3 hour CIT/LIT training program in June. Check back in May 2025 for dates.
  • Complete additional 60-90 minute online child safety training prior to camp.
  • Submit Camp Medical Form listing medical exam within past 3 years.
  • Undergo criminal background and reference checks by Wakeman BGC.
  • Be enrolled as a Wakeman BGC member for summer 2025

Keystone Club

Grades 9-12

Keystone Club is the Boys & Girls Club Movement’s most dynamic teen program: leadership and service clubs for 9th-12th grade teens designed to develop good character and help members grow to become productive, responsible adults and leaders. The Southport Clubhouse’s 2023 Keystone Club was recognized with Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Award for Community Service – presented to only one Club in the USA.

Steps to Join Keystone Club 

  1. Complete online Keystone Club application. Any applicant, returning or new, is required to complete an application, which includes a Service & Meeting Attendance Agreement. Application is due October 15.
  2. Purchase an annual Wakeman BGC Club membership (Gr. 9-12, $83).
  3. Register online for Keystone Club program.


Member Expectations:

  • Attendance at Meetings: Meetings are typically one hour long and held twice-monthly on Tuesdays from 7:30pm-8:30pm but meeting day may change occasionally due to presenter availability and special events.
  • Service Hours Requirement: Minimum 4 hours per month. Keystone Advisor Coreen Ahmad will post community and Clubhouse opportunities monthly through Sign Up Genius.
  • Service Initiatives: While Keystone Club depends on member ideas, some initiatives will be: Clubhouse Beautification Projects, Fitness and Health, Career and College Fair & Projects, STEAM, Torch Connection Committee, Wee Deliver, After School tutoring, environmental awareness, and Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Other Volunteer Opportunities: Keystoners will also be able to volunteer at the clubhouse during afterschool, concession stand, vacation day, basketball games and clinics, and more! 


Additional Information about Keystone Club:

Some Keystone Club members may be invited to attend Regional and National Conferences with teens from around the globe, allowing them to further develop leadership skills and understand a broader scope of service. Teens can be nominated to steering committees that help organize these Conferences. Fun Facts! Our Keystone Club had a delegate & advisor on the July 2022, July 2023 and July 2024 National Keystone Conference Steering Committee and an additional 11 teens attended the conference in Anaheim, California and 12 teens attended the conference in Dallas, TX! We even have a Keystone Club member & director on the BGCA Presidents Circle Brand Ambassador Program. Additional fees apply for those who participate in regional/national conferences.

Torch Club

Grades 6-8

Torch Club members elect officers and work together to implement projects in the four focus areas: service to Club and community; education; health and fitness; and social recreation. Come join the club that was nationally recognized for our community service two years in a row!

 

REQUIREMENTS: Members attend 2 meetings/month and perform 2 hours/month of community service from October-May. All hours are completed through projects planned by Torch Club members and Club advisors, as well as approved non-profits and community organizations. Hour-long meetings are typically twice-monthly on Thursdays between 7:00pm-8:30pm, but meeting day may change due to presenter availability and special events.

 

Application Process

  1. New & returning members must submit online application that includes an Agreement of Service & Attendance
  2. A brief orientation will be held at the first meeting for all Torch applicants.
  3. Candidates will be notified of their acceptance by email. Torch Club acceptance is not guaranteed for all applicants.
  4. Accepted members must have a current membership. Please make sure you will be able to fulfill the commitment of attending meetings and completing all volunteer hours.

Future Leaders of Wakeman Club (FLOW)

Grades 4-5

Future Leaders is a new service program at the Southport Clubhouse through which 4th-5th graders begin to develop and strengthen their community service involvement, leadership and teamwork while exploring their interest in helping others and curiosity about the world where they live.

In the spirit of the Southport Clubhouse’s nationally recognized and award-winning Torch Club (6th-8th grade) and nationally recognized and award-winning Keystone Club (9th-12th grade), Future Leaders Club will work together to implement projects focusing on education, fitness and community. Members will take turns managing meetings and activities. Participation fee includes a shirt.

Future Leaders Club members will complete a practice online application at their first meeting. Members will attend 1 meeting a month, typically on Tuesdays from 6:15-7:15 and will work on service projects at meetings. Fun community service opportunities to do at home will also be promoted. This program runs from November to May.

Youth of the Year

Each year, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club names two Youth of the Year from each clubhouse. These extraordinary members serve as exemplary ambassadors for Wakeman BGC youth and lend their strong voices to all of our Club's young people. The application and selection process begins in the fall of the candidate's junior or senior year of high school. Learn more.
